Do you know that Kyoto is home to the head shrine of Atago Shrine, which has about 900 shrines throughout Japan?
Mt. Atago(924 meters above sea level) is the second highest mountain in Kyoto.
Not only has it long been popular as a god of fire prevention, but it is also famous for its spectacular view of the city of Kyoto. If you walk from Kiyotaki bus stop to the summit and back, it takes about 4.5 hours walking slowly, depending on the individual.
Here is one such way to enjoy hiking Mt. Atago.
Along the way, every 100 meters, there is are billboards(Japanese only…) with “〇/40” written by the Saga-Arashiyama Fire Brigade.
There are many unique and punchy one-word messages written on each of them. This billboard sometimes makes me grin when I am getting tired of the steep climb. There are quite a few things that make me look twice!
